Fitness Philosophies

There are as many fitness philosophies to golf fitness development as there are fitness instructors. The theme of modern philosophies is that they consist of a 'total approach' to fitness.

The key components to fitness programs are:

Any player likes to have fun; to enjoy the game of golf. Golf is more fun if you're playing well and achieving the goals you set for yourself. Hitting the ball on the fairway is better than hitting it in the hazard. Wayward shots aren't much fun. If you're a competitive golfer, winning is more fun that losing.

Fitness philosophies tie into improving the enjoyment factor for every golfer. Better conditioning means improved flexibility, strength, speed and endurance. Better health, sound mind, fit body -- all these attributes improve your well being. Any athlete in any sport will improve performance through improved conditioning. They will be happier and more successful both on and off their field of endeavor. The quality of life will improve.

With a common theme of total fitness, how do the components relate to better golf?

Flexibility

Flexibility will affect your range of motion and the elasticity of muscle tissues to weight and swing resistance. Good flexibility means a potential for a larger swing arc and longer backswing. A stretching program can develop your swing flexibility. Improving your flexibility can improve your strength.

Strength

Strength through improved ability to lift weights, means a greater capacity for power, resistance to fatigue and ability for swing movement control.

Speed

Strength and flexibility influence club head speed during the golf swing. Speed with muscular control of the swing movement, will determine how far the golf ball travels. Speed and control are key components of a powerful golf swing.

Endurance

Cardio vascular training will improve your energy and muscular efficiency during intense activity. Raising your heart rate through brisk walks or running will enhance your ability to sustain physical activity for longer periods. Resistance to fatigue will increase and your ability to perform under stress and for longer periods. Walking and carrying a golf bag over a round will be easier after a cardio vascular training program. Your concentration will improve and so will your results.
